Ah, I wonder. A great pity if so. She looks such a delicate little thing. I hate gangsters and it always pisses me off when I see some Hollywood angel on the arm of one or other of those monobrowed gorillas.

Yes, I always think that when watching those BB chorus lines. It's like a smiling competition isn't it? Each one is trying to outsmile the one before, and you can read so much into the faces.

Such a terrific post, Matthew. Looking at these photos of Irene, I think I remember her from Gold Diggers of 1937. I want to go back and watch it again to find her.

You're so right about stardom being nothing but luck. I often think that. There are many stars who made big who didn't really deserve it, especially the women.

I would have loved to see films with Irene Ware in the lead. I'm dying to watch The Raven now. I hope TCM plays it soon!

How sad. Watching classic films so much, you see so many people who could have been big stars. Even all those girls in the Busby Berkeley movies must have thought they were getting their big break when they had five seconds of smiling and dancing on screen.

The Raven sounds like a fantastic film, I'm a huge early horror film so I'll definitely check it out!

I feel so melancholy after reading this Matthew. How very, very sad. How awful it must have been for all those lovely "screen aspirants" who desperately wanted to succeed.

I think you need to get your pinny on to cheer yourself up. Here is Adolph Menjou's Venetian Spiced Cheese recipe. Enjoy it my dear. Let me know what film you watched whilst devouring it and how it turned out!

Adolph Menjou’s Venetian Spiced Cheese

Mash 170g cream cheese with 50g butter. Add 1 teaspoon paprika, 1 teaspoon chopped capers, 2 chopped anchovies, 1 tablespoon of chopped chives, ½ teaspoon caraway seeds and ½ teaspoon salt. Blend all ingredients with cheese mixture very well. Place in mould, cover tightly and set in refrigerator. Let this remain in refrigerator for several hours.
