I'd say you're right. It's interesting you got that impression. We tend to cherish our stars until they get too big - and going Hollywood is the most obvious example - and then we disown them. And we focus minutely on their ups and downs. Nobody is just left alone to get on with what they do...

As a foreigner, yes, I get that impression when I read British books on the subject. Somehow the pattern I perceive is:

1st stage: Actors/actresses first impress British critics and audiences. Audiences and Critics love them.

2nd stage: After 1st stage, Actor/actress works quite remarkably on a string of British films. Audiences keep loving them, Critics not always, but remain civil.

3rd stage: due to their succesful work, Hollywood calls them and start an equally successful American career. Audiences keep loving them, but are somehow distanced, critics treat them as if they carried the plague.

The funny thing is, t British performers working in American films usually get a greater audience world-wide: from my Peninsular perspective, I can tell that much love towards Britain and the British here comes from the enjoyment their actors give us as an audience... And frankly we don't care if they delight us in an American or British film. We can in fact enjoy them a lot in Franco-Turkish-Japanese co-production: it's their art and talent, not the vessel where it is placed, which bears the "Made in Britain" label

Some years ago, enticed after reading James Mason's enjoyable autobiography, I read Sheridan Morley's book on him. I couldn't believe it... Morley seemed to think that everything Mason did in Hollywood wasn't too worthy, in his opinion, mason wasted himself in Hollywood. I cannot agree with him.

Let's see: "A Star is Born", "Five Fingers", "Prisoner of Zenda", "Bigger than life"... just to mention four, strike me as rather good to memorable films, with top-notch work by Mason... Surely Mr. Morley was a bit quick to dismiss Mason's achievements in American films? And I have to say I'm a big fan of Mason's British films, my personal favourite being "A touch of Larceny" ;D

Interesting! Thanks for sharing so much about Patricia Roc...I'd always enjoyed her performances in the Margaret Lockwood movies you mentioned, but haven't seen her in anything else, to my knowledge. I'll have to check her out.
