Britons confused by artistry; compensation offered...

“Odeon Liverpool One can confirm it has issued a small number of refunds to guests who were unaware that The Artist was a silent film. The cinema is happy to offer guests a refund on their film choice if they raise concern with a member of staff within 10 minutes of the film starting.”

Good grief... (read on)

Haha, I posted this as well. Some people appear to be taking it as a slight on Liverpool specifically. The Guardian's comments page on it were particularly funny I thought :P

Well my original heading for the post was going to be 'Liverpudlians confused by artistry'.
I only changed in case any international readers might not know what a Liverpudlian is.
I wonder myself sometimes.

Hahaha, I live in the UK but am not actually British/English myself so I feel its not really my place to be laughing at or defending Liverpool. Though maybe we could get a quote from Boris on this for the final verdict?

Speaking as a Liverpudlian who has seen The Artist twice, I can only apologise for the confusion caused... I can confirm that silent film-ism is, however, not simply restricted to one city in this fair land.

The whole thing is daft obviously but why isn't this film top of the cinema charts instead of The Iron Lady and other risible talkies?!

And crickey, check out today's Sun http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/features/4070658/The-Artist-Sun-man-tries-living-life-as-a-silent-movie-star.html

Silent London tweeted it. I don't, of course, read The S*n. ;-)

'Sun man Lee Price' - I love it.
How does one get to be a Sun man? Did proud Mr Price look at his newborn boy and say, "Well, Mrs Price, I think we've got ourselves a little Sun man here.."
What an ambition!
Personally, I don't read any Br*t*sh new***pers, except in the interests of squeamish research.
And the whole idea of a 'city of culture' is typical post-cultural twaddle.

But isn't it interesting the way this movie has invaded all corners of the pop culture and media?
I certainly didn't see it coming.

It's great to see the buzz - even when there's a complacent surprise in some of it. On the One Show they made a point of reminding poeple that "it's-a-silent-movie" as if there was anything surprising about that.

I'm amazed some people got upset about the lack of dialogue - I mean, can't they *read*!? And, of course, it would have to be in bloomin' Liverpool; the capital of cringe as well as culture! Maybe the two go together in some weird way(sorry Mum!)?

Ultimately though, The Artist is simply one of the best films I've seen for ages...makes me smile just thinking about it!

I agree entirely.
Part of me sniffs at the 'who'd have thunk it?' quality of much of the BBC-level reaction, but 90% of me is just plain old fashioned over the moon about it.
And if it makes silent films cool again, even temporarily, then so much the better.
